9 out of 10 cats prefer Wholemeal

It's true! After a painstaking survey of over 3 cats that were left in the kitchen last night (two of them recovering from surgery), we can reveal that Cats prefer wholemeal.

When give a choice of White Sliced or Wholemeal sliced, all 3 cats passed over the white and pulled the carefully wrapped brown bread from the bread bin onto the floor where they nibbled various slices in a blind taste test.

No slice was left unturned in this research and had they been able to open the fridge, then we could have expected further test results on the odds of wholemeal versus white landing butter side up.

Rumours of flying cats seen in the vicinity are completely unfounded and no cat was available for comment.

If you're a pet lover (like us) then you'll welcome the opportunity to purchase personalised photo gifts for family and friends featuring your favourite feline (or pooch). Especially our photo glass chopping boards and photo jigsaws.

RSS the new email – He might be right

RSS the new email – He might be right!

Through my email inbox came an article entitled “RSS – The New Email” and the author raised some very interesting points that I thought were worth highlighting.

For instance, you can embed audio and video in an RSS Feed. Might not sound that fantastic but as more and more companies explore RSS, they've come to realise that trying to embed video into a normal email is a no-starter.

100% Spam free – yes you heard me right. Because RSS is content is subscribed to anonymously, there's no address to send the spam too!

100% deliver-ability – Gotcha! Any email marketer will tell you their biggest problem is delivery. Its estimated that for any email campaign, expect anywhere between 10% and 40% to be undelivered.

The same goes for smaller emails you send on a regular basis as more and more carriers look at ways of fighting spam emails, with higher levels of 'legitimate' emails going into peoples junk folders.

So what's holding this mass exodus to RSS up? Well, at present, according to sources, less than 20% of Internet users read content with the aid of an RSS reader.

And the problem gets worse. Even amongst frequent web browsers, when asked, many did not know the meaning of the little orange symbol.

When you put these two figures together, you end up with a very slow sea of change, but I reckon that's only a matter of time as more and more of us catch onto the benefits of using RSS. If ever proof were needed, you only need look at the recent upgrade of Explorer to version 7, which now comes with a built in RSS reader/subscriber in the 'favourites' menu.

The stage is set and the time has come for RSS Feeds to enter center right. The death of email – debatable but certainly now is the time to start exploring making RSS work for you personally and your business.

Have you subscribed to our RSS Feed? No? Don't worry, just click here and add our feed URL to your reader or Explorer Version 7 Feed Favourites.

Most Bizarre car forecourt windscreen price ever - “cars from £7991” spotted in a car dealership on the way home the other night through Derby.

Sorry but it's just too confusing- £3995 etc we can cope with but £7991, when did you ever see a car (or anything else for that matter) in that sort of price bracket at such an 'odd' price (or am I the only one who thinks that's odd)?

If you come across any other bizarre forecourt prices (other than at the fuel pumps), then let us know below.

Use your blog like a newsletter - a guide for new Bloggers

Use your blog like a newsletter - a guide for new Bloggers

Hi There.

As some of our regular readers will know, when it comes to social bookmarking and networking, I'm a bit of a fan.

I was speaking with a friend the other day – he runs a successful martial arts school – and he was asking my advice on how to attract more members.

Do you have a Blog and RSS? I asked. No was the reply and so began a very stimulating conversation on the merits of these two mediums.

His biggest concern is time as he doesn't have a lot spare. I suggested the Blogger platform as we use it and have never had any problems (yet – touch wood), but for content he was not so sure.

So we went through his daily business activity. Being a 'club', content could be aimed at the 'members' but open for anyone interested to comment on and read also – a kind of online newsletter.

I suggested that he might like to promote this through his membership. He admits that many already have myspace and facebook profiles and whilst he was unsure of using them himself I explained that if his members started linking back to his blog then he would quickly build up a steady following that might actually attract new recruits.

It all sounded good in theory and should perform well in practice to.

The key to beginning is not to make it too complicated or time consuming as if you neglect something, then it will quickly fall off the radar of possible regular readers. Once it's established, then you can start to expand upon the content.

If you're a club or group, then it gets even easier. Why not consider handing the day to day writing and posting over to a few trusted members to update? That way, not only have you solved the time issue, but you'll also have a much better mix of articles and posts from different perspectives and styles, which should make for a better reading experience for the visitor.

So what are you waiting for? Go get a blog today and start posting.

You can visit blogger.com and use their really easy interface to set up your blog in a matter of minutes. Once its up and running, then you can explore adding more features and functionality as time and programming skill will allow. The best bit is that whilst you're doing this, you'll already be attracting readers and search engines alike.

Note: There are other blogging platforms out there e.g Wordpress. Please satisfy yourself that the platform you are choosing meets your needs. Its worth spending a little bit of time on a who knows where your blog will be this time next year?

Get Mum something special for Mother's Day

Get Mum something special for Mother's Day.

Mum's are smashing aren't they? They do all that stuff for us, day in day out for years and how do we reward them, how do we say thank you? Well previously, your choice may have been limited to flowers or chocolates (or whatever else the late night garage sells – we've all heard the stories of Mum's that were given jump leads, tow cables and windscreen washer fluid on Mother's Day).

I know one year my Mum got a new vacuum cleaner as she'd always complained that her old one was too heavy to use. Looking back it wasn't the best choice of present but at least the good intention and forethought was there.

The one thing Mother's definitely are, is proud of their children and grandchildren. They'll have pictures everywhere and they just love new photo's to add to their collection.

So what better way of surprising Mum than with a clever personalised photo gift? From Jigsaw Puzzles to glass chopping boards, all personalised with a picture of you or the grandchildren.

Our Photo Gifts really do show your appreciation. Each photo gift is hand printed in our own workshops, with attention to detail and faithful reproduction of your original all part of the service.

And if you live far away, then we are happy to post your order without shipping paperwork to the UK address of your choice – just let us know when ordering.

Fabulous Photo Gifts – fabulous personalised photo gifts for Mums on Mother's Day.

Click here to start personalising a photo gift for your Mum. Remember, some of our Photo Gifts take 10 to 14 days to arrive from date of order so remember to check the delivery schedule of your chosen gift and order in plenty of time.

Sat Nav - the peril of the 21st century?

Sat Nav - the peril of the 21st Century?

I ask only after reading on the BBC website that a pizza delivery driver and his passenger turned and tried to drive up a railway line after following directions from the satelite navigation system in the car.

They were lucky enough to pick a quiet line and get stuck in a cattle grid.

I like the comment fom the rail spokesman - "When a train hits a car, there's only one winner".

Any other 21st century inventions fall into the same category? It's over to you.

Looking for someone to make your photo into a jigsaw puzzle

If you're looking for a company to make a jigsaw puzzle using your own photograph, then may we recommend Fabulous Photo Gifts?

Firstly, they have possibly the largest selection of jigsaw puzzles – from 15 piece wooden jigsaw puzzles right up to large 2000 piece jigsaw puzzles that come in a box with the picture printed on the lid – just like the jigsaw puzzles you would buy in the shops!

The difference is they have your own photographs on so they make an ideal present and gift idea for family & friends.

Within their impressive range, you'll also find novelty jigsaw puzzles with pieces that spell out Happy Birthday or I Love You etc. (the last one is ideal for Valentines Day). Again you add your photo to the jigsaw to make it truly personal.

They've also got two thin panoramic boxed jigsaws which go great with thin 'letterbox style' panoramic's or group shots. Don't confuse these with normal landscape orientation photographs which will fit to the whole range, except the 1500 piece square jigsaw puzzle especially for larger square photographs.

Secondly, you'll be re-assured that your online photo jigsaw puzzle order is in safe hands. Proprietor Mandy Collins is an award winning digital photographer and artist and knows a thing or two about image optimisation and the latest digital techniques for turning photographs into fabulous large jigsaws.

Fabulous Photo Gifts want you to be really delighted with your purchase and recommend them to your family and friends.

Thirdly, you can place your order online and personalise your choice of jigsaw puzzle (or any other gift idea they offer for that matter) there and then using your digital photo file.

However, if you don't have a digital copy, then they offer a free scanning service as part of their postal order service.

So the next time you're thinking of giving a personalised photo jigsaw puzzle, think of Fabulous Photo Gifts. Here's what one customer had to say upon receiving his order...

“Just wanted to say great quality jigsaws and everybody who has seen them have said the same. Thank you”

How I dealt with outerinfo and smartweb advertising pop ups

outerinfo and smartweb advertising pop ups and how to deal with them.

It seems the most innocent of searches can still land your PC in trouble these days. For example, last night I was searching for an online manual to help me remove an extractor hood (ariston make to be precise) for cleaning.

Google offered a number of helpful sites and i clicked on a few to find the info i wanted. Then trouble started.

Pop ups began appearing from outerweb and smartweb – the usual online casino adverts – so I quickly pulled the network cable out of the back of the machine.

However, getting rid of these pop ups proved more difficult. Normally I'd run Panda Active scan but that kept hanging Explorer (7) so I tried Lavasoft Ad-Aware instead.

Interestingly, after I'd run it and removed about 90 'nasty files', the pop ups still happened without Explorer even being launched.

I went back to Add/Remove programs and guess what? Where there hadn't been, was now a program 'outerinfo' so I removed that (it asked for a 4 digit verification code which i followed) and, touch wood, so far (after another re-start following the removal) I haven't had a problem.

Obviously it disguises itself as something else before running ad-aware, but that at least forced to show its true colours.

Of course all this is well and good, but it has meant virtually a whole morning of messing about to get rid of it off my PC.

However by the afternoon, things were not going well. It looked like the keyboard log had been affected as i'd start typing a url etc and the cursor would drift from the open window.

In desperation, I finally backed up my documents and re-formatted the hard drive back to factory settings. Now I've spent the best part of the small hours last night and today re-loading all the software I use, getting my rss feeds up to date and url bookmarks re-instated.

That and the numerous windows updates as windows detects all those updates since it was first loaded. I've just got as far as service pack 2 so i'm looking forward to explorer 7 appearing and then I will be pretty much back where I started (I hope).

Back to the Ariston hob extractor hood – there are two little black push in and slide clips next to the lamp lens – it then just slides out!

(Please check with a qualified PC repair technician if you are unsure of following any of the advice above. All PC systems differ and what works for one may not work for another, before proceeding).

P.S – To avoid such instances in the future, I'll be browsing using Mozilla Firefox Browser I think.

Home Scanning Tips - 5

If you've been following our little collection of home photograph scanning tips, then thank you for your interest. We hope you've found them useful.

Our last tip (for now) features cropping - when to crop, when not to crop, particularly if you're intending to use your scan for a photo gift order. However, many of the tips and guidelines still apply.

Tip 5 - Crop your scan to the image itself.
We do receive some images where the whole scanner bed is the image. At Fabulous Photo Gifts, we hand check every order photograph and crop etc where required, however some more automated companies might 'print what they get' and you would end up with a mousemat etc with a postage stamp size actual image surrounded by lots of white!

Try to scan your image squarely.
No we don't mean we only accept square scans! What we mean is try to line your print up with the horizontal and vertical guides on the scanner bed. This will reduce your file size and help us to process your order that little bit quicker.

Don't crop the scan.
Don't be tempted to crop your scanned image as we never 'stretch to fit'. If there is a particular area of a scanned photo you want omitting or want the gift centered on, then just email us after placing your order (or make notes in the checkout comments section) and we'll do our very best to help.

Better to have too much image to work with than not enough.

Well that just about covers it for now. We'll probably add to the series later but if there's a particular topic or question you'd like answering, then just leave a comment to this post and Fabulous Photo Gifts will try to answer it.

Top Tips for using Mobile Phone Images on Photo Gifts

Mobile Phone Images on Photo Gifts

Cameras on mobile phones? Yes, even the most basic of mobiles now come with a camera and whilst thats good news if you want a quick visual reminder of just how you stack the bikes on the back of the car, it's not so good if you intend to turn your photo into a photo gift.

As most mobile camera images are only a few Kb in size, there usually isn't enough detail to make them any bigger. Secondly, as most phone pictures are taken without flash, then indoor detail can be really poor.

Check your settings on your phone. Are you shooting in memory saving mode? You really need to be trying to get the biggest most detailed file size photo you can if you're serious about turning it into a photo gift.

A good way to check is to view the image at print size, click its properties and see how big that print size is. Because of the smallness of the image sensors and lens on phones, it won't be massive.

This will give you some idea of what your picture will look like at the size of a mug or mousemat etc.

That's not to say we don't accept orders where the picture has been taken with a mobile. We'll always try our best to optimise and resize images received, however, with some uploads, there is never enough detail to build on. We'll always let you know if that's the case.

Of course, mobile phone camera's are very much about 'capturing the moment' and those moments are usually the most treasured and ones you want to surprise someone with a photo gift. Follow our guidelines above, hold the phone steady, try to make use of outdoor light wherever possible and get as close to the subject without blurring the detail as possible.

Visit Fabulous Photo Gifts to order your next personalised photo gift online.

Part 1 - Improve your RSS Feeds ITEMS TAG - SEO Tip

Hi SEO Fans - Apologies I've not written anything seo orientated for a while but what I'm about to show you below (if you're not doing it already of course) will improve your RSS Validation when putting new 'items' into your feed.

Below I've laid out a typical 'Item' as it should read for maximum validation. Don't worry about re-visiting old rss alerts - let them 'expire' off of your rss feed naturally as they are replaced by newer 'items' (I try to keep to about the last 10 to 15 myself).

Here's how the code for each 'item' should look in your text editor:

<item>

You'll need to replace the url with your own of course in 'link' and 'guid' lines. These are usually the same url, its just the 'guid' notifys readers that this is the unique reference for this post so that repeats don't happen.

It's also good practise to put your actual name (in brackets) after your email address.

The only validation problem you might come across is the dates - you have to be very precise with the layout here - the month is abreviated to the first three letters and capped (upper case first letter).

I'll blog more tomorrow about improving your heading coding and also mention a great validation service to help you get it right.

With the increasing use of RSS Feeds as part of your overall marketing strategy, it's important to get it right.

Home Scanning Tips - Tip 3 and 4

Home Scanning Tips - Numbers 3 and 4

As number 3 is just a short one, I've posted tip 4 as well. Common sense? Well yes probably but you'd be amazed how many people never do carry out the two tips below that deal with image quality.

Tip 3. View your scan at print size.
This will help show up any flaws in the scan or quality of the original photograph.

Tip 4. Clean the scanner plate and the print you're intending to scan before you start. Sounds obvious but you'd be amazed at the number of scanned images we receive where the dust is visible in the pre-production and sometimes the finished photo gift.

There will be more tips later this week.

Super Heroes Revealed

Super Heroes Revealed

In conversation the other day with Jim at Go! Smell the Flowers!, to illustrate a point (which now escapes me completely) I commented on the fact that in todays 'Super Hero' films – the Hero nearly always reveals his true identity to someone around him – Batman, Spiderman, even the Rocketeer!

Poor old Adam West (Batman) what must he be making of it all?

What's your take on this 'Hero reveals identity to get the girl routine'? Are our hero's becoming soft? Or is Hollywood portraying the message that you don't have to be alone?

Home Scanning Tips - Tip 2

Home Scanning tips number 2 - De-screening and other filters.

De-screening and other filters.
If your scanner and software has de-screening, noise reduction or restoration/colour restore options, then make several scans with the various settings and compare which one gives the best results. Sometimes, the best scan is the original without any restoration or de-screening!

Home Photograph Scanning Tips - Number 1

Scanners for transferring photographs and other printed materials into your computer are becomimg better and better with each new generation or model launch and home scanning is still big business although expected to decline as more and more of us get into digital photography.

Old photo's make great subject matter for personalising photo gifts with and we see quite a few order uploads involving home scanned photographs, sometimes with not the best results.

It's worth reminding you that Fabulous Photo Gifts does offer a free professional scanning service (maximum size A4) as part of any order made via the post. However, as most home scanners are perfectly capable of producing a decent quality scan, here are a few tips.

Scan at 300dpi.
If you have the option, then always scan at 300 dpi. Don't worry about file size at this point as you can always reduce the dpi gradually if your final scan is over the 10Mb upload limit.

72dpi scans usually result in smaller file sizes which don't resize to well as so much original information is lost in the scan.

We'll be publishing more home scanning tips throughout the next couple of weeks so remember to re-visit. Alternatively, why not subscribe to our RSS Feed which will alert you when a new tip is published?

Wine review - d'Arenberg Fortified Shiraz

Review taken from All Things Local Community Magazine.

I discovered d’Arenberg Fortified Shiraz, whilst on holiday in Masham, North Yorkshire. Masham was not somewhere I expected to find a wonderful wine shop, selling interesting wines. When we discovered the shop last year, it had only been open for two weeks. We wandered in and discovered an Aladdin’s cave full of wine and very helpful and knowledgeable owners, Philip and Angela. Needless to say our Christmas wine shop came early that year. Both of us love Shiraz, so seeing a fortified Shiraz was enough to tempt us to buy a bottle. We saved it for Christmas day and decanted the wine, as it does have some sediment in the bottom. It was a truly wonderful wine.

Brand: d’Arenberg
Type: 2004 Vintage
Region: McLaren Vale, South Australia
Grape: Shiraz
Alcohol Strength: 17.5 %

The colour – Garnet red/black
The bouquet –Ripe blackberry fruits, spice and liquorice, with a slight brandy smell.

Life can be Fabulous!

Last year, we promised that your favourite photo gift blog was going to be changing – and how!

In addition to all the usual personalised photo gift giving news from Fabulous Photo Gifts and quality SEO tips and advice from our own webmaster, we'll be introducing all new topical pieces for you to discuss amongst yourselves, with more illustrations and shorter articles, to help you through the days and year ahead.

And that doesn't mean we're after your comments (although those are always welcome), rather we want to promote discussion between you and others – perhaps people you work with or a social club or group you attend, even your neighbour in the shopping or bus queue!

As well as leading questions like “Why do children always drop peas on the floor?”, we'll also be bringing you editorial highlights – recipes and recommended wines etc. from community magazine – All Things Local as part of our continuing commitment to the local community in which we live.

Finally, we hope our pleasant banter and easy style will bring a smile to your face and help you through the day.

If all else fails, then we recommend our personalised photo gifts as a much needed tonic – for family, for friends, for colleagues, for fund-raising, for you.

After all, if you know where to look, then life can be fabulous!
