SEO article - Does your business blog? Given the latest figures I saw the other day - it probably isn't.
Here's what i found:
A recent survey of UK PR agencies concluded that almost 80 % have no social media services. According to a study of 100 major PR firms 79% have not yet developed online PR and social media services. And half of those that did get the 'clue' are based in London, says the Media report. 28% of the London based PR firms offer Internet PR services and 14% of them blog.
Well firstly it's important to understand what a Blog is. Here's a definition "Short for Web log, a blog is a Web page that serves as a publicly accessible personal journal for an individual. Typically updated daily, blogs often reflect the personality of the author".
Things have moved on and now that definition can read "as a publicly accessible personal journal for an individual or business that reflect the field of expertise or nature of trading" as more and more companies begin to realise the potential of an online 'journal'.
One thing I do hear a lot of is comments like "I wouldn't know what to blog about" or "I never have time for blogging".
Here are some handy topics you could be blogging about right now. Bloggers cramp? Here are some blogging ideas to get you started. You'll be amazed how much content you alread have:-
Industry specific articles – profiles and benefits of yours over others. Lots of opportunity for keywords like upvc, double glazing, etc.
Industry topical articles – e.g fuel bills rise or government legislation on energy efficiency – include figures in your article and how your product can help meet or overcome.
Installations – post pictures of your last installation – always good content as it gives your business a geographical weight in searches.
Staff news – post about new appointments or promotions from within – people love to read of success stories. Don't forget individual training accomplishments. Babies born, TV or media appearances.
Factory news – if you're shutting down for a 'factory fortnight', then let people know but remember to post when you're back!
Product news – Accreditations, BS standards etc, new products are all great keyword text for people and search engines alike.
Offbeat news – don't be afraid to include the off-beat e.g our receptionist Jenny's cat had 6 kittens – here's a picture. You'd be amazed how many people will find it and of course your blog leads straight back to your company website.
Links – you may not like to offer links from your website to other websites – after all, you worked hard to get that visitor so you don't want them leaving you do you? However, you could offer a link back from your blog so start a 'blogroll'.
Guest writers – know anybody who can write? Why not invite them to submit an article. It will give your blog more appeal with a fresh slant on writing styles and topics.
Involve your staff – Why not delegate the job of making sure there's at least one update a week – take the pressure off yourself. Even better, get all your staff to submit at least one article so that you have a choice of material or you post even more regularly.
Topical media – if its in the mainstream news e.g Wimbledon, then write how this affects you or your thoughts on the topic (without being too political or outspoken!). If it's popular and people are searching for it, why not try to grab some of the attention but try to lead it back to the benefits of using your product.
Well that's it. You've got a wealth of material now so get out there and get blogging.

Personalise your kitchen
Coinciding with the launch of our new larger personalised glass chopping board (or worktop savers as I was recently reminded some people call them), the other day I came across a website offering bespoke fitted kitchens designed with disabled users, including wheelchair users, in mind.

As this picture shows, it makes what must be a difficult task in an non-disabled frendly kitchen, much better - worktops at the right height, appliances somebody in a wheelchair can reach and use etc.
I've added a link so you can find out more by visiting their website - www.disabledkitchens.org or if you know someone who is disabled and struggling with their present kitchen, then why not pass it on?
If you'd like to personalise your kitchen still further, then don't forget our range of photo gift glass chopping boards, dinner trays, placemats, coasters and mugs that you can have your own photographs added to.
Everything is printed by hand in our own workshops.

As part of our 'Autumn collection' for 2008, we wanted to try something we've never tried before.

There's an example of one live now on our website - just click here to see a personalised dinner tray example.
You can order our 'collage tray' option with up to 5 photographs. We'll assume the photograph you upload with your order is the main photograph (most central) and then once you get your order confirmation, you can email us the other photographs (up to a maximum of 4) with any particular instructions.
We'll use our years of photographic and gift printing experience to produce the best collage using your photo's.
Well it's been a busy day so we'll sign off for now. Watch this space for news of more personalised photo gifts coming soon.

What's Wrong With Our Fund Raising Scheme?
What's wrong with our fund raising scheme?
It's a question we've been asking ourselves for quite some time now. Originally, when we came up with the idea of people being able to fund raise for their own causes just by forwarding visitors to our photo gift website and imputing a unique code – we thought we'd answered the prayers of a local family who approached us to do just that – raise funds for their two little boys born with SMA - http://www.twinswithsma.co.uk
At the time, we thought we couldn't just offer this scheme to anybody so we had a 'rule' of a minimum bulk order to then obtain your code, thinking clubs, teams, charities and schools etc would have no problem with this basic requirement.
However, after a lack of interest, we decided to drop the 'qualifying bulk order' requirement and just offered it as another service to our customers, their friends and families and the public in general.
And it really is easy to use.
When placing an order, all the visitor has to do is use your special code (which they'll know as its printed beside the 'click here' button to take them from your site to ours) either before they start shopping and enter the code at the foot of the home page or when they're checking out at PayPal, just include the code in their additional comments. If they forget, they can even email us afterwards and we'll sort it out.
We do all the rest.
What is in it exactly for the participants? Well, basically we donate 10% of every basket total that has their code on it back to themselves or their nominated 'good cause'.
We make a quarterly payment by cheque (monthly for larger amounts) to them and that's it.
There's no joining or membership fee. Obviously the more they promote the 'scheme membership', the more orders we'll receive and the more money they'll make.
And lets be clear – this isn't a one off deal. The 10% applies to every order, every time from whoever uses their code so in the example of a school, long after the kids have left, their families and friends could still be raising money for the school etc.
And because of the year round appeal of personalised photo gifts, we're confident that people using our scheme will be able to raise funds all year round. Apart from Birthdays, Anniversaries and Holidays, there are a number of special celebration days throughout the year – Mother's Day, Christmas etc that make excellent photo gift giving opportunities.
We've also worked very hard to keep adding to the range of gift ideas we offer so there's always new ideas to choose from for returning customers. All prices for all pockets.
So a year later and although we have a few people using the scheme, we've received very few orders bearing the codes.
Is the 'scheme' too simple? We're beginning to wonder. More now so than ever when various good causes are crying out for funds, we feel frustrated more than anything else that nobody is taking us up on our offer of what amounts to 'free money'.
Lets recap the scheme:-
Your website has a link button to Fabulous Photo Gifts (with your code written beside it)
Your visitor/friend/family member/yourself uses the link and the code
You / your visitor orders a personalised photo gift from Fabulous Photo Gifts
They use your code, either in the 'home page' or the checkout comments on PayPal – they can even email us after placing their order if they forgot.
We donate 10% of the basket total back to you.
Can you see a flaw? We're stumped but we'd welcome some input on how we can make this scheme work better for people and increase its usage.
Thanks for your time – It's really appreciated. Leave your suggestions in comments.
Jonathan – Technical Partner – Fabulous Photo Gifts.
If you'd like to have your own 'Funds for Life' scheme membership code, just email us with your cause, we'll come back to you with your scheme code and do the registration sheet then (just so we know who to make the cheques payable to!). You can design your own button or we can supply one for you to use along with the html required.
To see an example of our fund raising scheme in action, visit our newest 'member' Steve who's planning to trek Nepal raising money for Unicef – see it by clicking here.
*Please note that bulk orders are excluded from the Funds for Life scheme. You do not have to be a registered charity. Please bear in mind our delivery charges for non UK orders which are available upon request and quoted on actual costs per order weight/destination. Sorry, due to Insurance terms and conditions, we cannot deliver to the USA.

Garden visit on rare day out
We enjoyed a rare day out at the weekend and visited a hidden gardens - Dunge Valley Hidden Garden - to be precise in the Goyt Valley outside of Buxton.
The gardens have an amazing collection of Rhododendrons and Azaleas etc with some of the plants grown from seed collected by the owners during treks in Nepal.
Although we were out of season for many of the flowering borders, the walks and pathways thru the gardens, including a steep gorge with a waterfall and stream bubbling along it were still worth a visit and the especially narrow lane down to the entrance.
Whilst taking on some refreshment in their tea room, it was obvious from the pictures on the wall of the gardens before they started planting just how much they have changed and moulded the gardens and grounds.
We receive a lot of garden and floral pictures here at Fabulous Photo Gifts from customers personalising everything from Jigsaw Puzzles to glass worktop savers or chopping boards.
Here's a link to their website - www.dungevalley.co.uk but check their opening times if you're thinking of visiting. And don't forget, if you do visit and take a great photograph whilst you're there, then you could use it to personalise a photo gift from us and use it as a present for someone or even keep it for yourself.

Pet Photo Gifts - Show off your pet
Fabulous Photo Gifts had an office day out to the Bakewell Show this week. We were particularly keen to go as we've promised ourselves every year we would, only to have something last minute crop up and prevent us.
We're all dog and cat mad so it was really good fun wandering around the dog show arena's as the various dog classes were judged. Were you there?
We saw a lot of beautiful dogs, from the small to the large. And it reminded us of some of the pet photo's customers have uploaded and personalised one of our photo gifts with.
We've had our fair share of breeds and boy! do those pooches know how to pose. Not to be left out, their feline counterparts have had their fare share of photo gift glory too.
One customer in particular ordered a gift with a lovely picture of his pair of dogs sitting in an old armchair. What stuck out was the comical expression on one of the dogs faces.
A few months down the line (quite a few), we received a similar picture - we noticed because of the chair and the cheeky expression on one of the dogs faces.
So when we sent the completed order out, we dropped a little note in to say we were glad to see both dogs were still well.
We had a lovely reply back from the family giving us a rundown of the pairs history/family ties etc.
So if you're a pet lover or you want to buy something special for a pet lover, then why not think of us? Our superb range of personalised photo gift ideas means there's something for everybody and all ages. Click here to view our range of photo gift ideas, ideally suited to your pet photo's.
We've found in the past that our coasters and placemats, dinner trays and clocks are particular favourites with Pet Owners as is our range of boxed Jigsaw Puzzles.
Whatever photo gift idea you choose to have your favourite pet or animal photo personalised onto, you can be assured that your photo gift will have been optimised and printed by hand to help ensure that you're more than delighted with the finished pet photo gift.
Unlike some, you won't find us lying down on the job.....

Steve's trekking Nepal for Unicef
Hi Photo Gift blog watchers - a quick bit of news for you.
A friend of a friend is going to be trekking in the Himalayan Mountains of Nepal on behalf of Unicef - well here's the point of the journey in Steve's own words....
"On 8th May 2009 I will be joining a group of volunteers on a 10 day trek in the Himalayan Mountains of Nepal on behalf of UNICEF to raise funds to support child vaccination and education projects in the region.
The trek will reach the summit of Pike Peak at just over 4000m in altitude, from where we should be able to view neighbouring Mount Everest.
Representing a physical challenge, requiring a lot of preparation; we will be travelling light across steep and rough terrain and camping in temperatures around -10 oC (a challenge in itself!). I am also aiming to raise a minimum of £3000 to support this much needed cause. Any support you can give me towards this goal will be greatly appreciated and extremely well received by UNICEF to support the children of Nepal in need of basic health and education.
As I am covering all my own travel costs, ALL The money raised will directly benefit the children of Nepal."
Well we'd like to wish Steve our own very good wishes for his upcoming trek as I'm sure you would want to too.
